Informative tips on how to keep your dog’s skin and coat healthy

If you notice that your dog is excessively scratching or licking, it could be a sign that they have irritated, itchy skin. Itchy skin can be caused by a number of reasons including fleas, ticks, mites, infection, or sometimes a food intolerance or allergy to something. Other factors to look out for can include patchy fur due to hair loss, and a generally dry, dull looking coat. If you notice any of these issues, then it’s important to find the root of the problem.

Seek advice

Usually the best thing to do first is to take your dog to a qualified veterinarian who can do a thorough examination and rule out any more serious conditions that could be linked to the symptoms. Usually, itchy skin is caused by something that can be easily fixed, and there are several solutions that you can use to try and improve your dog’s skin and coat.

These solutions can include utilising a safe and proven flea control treatment to ensure that all of your pets are always free of fleas, ticks and mites. Also, make sure that you use a hypoallergenic washing detergent that is suitable for sensitive skin, to wash your dog’s bedding and toys. Additionally, if you tend to bathe your dog, it would be beneficial to use a gentle and soothing dog shampoo which will avoid any further irritation.

Look out for ingredients such as aloe vera and oatmeal that contain soothing properties. Furthermore, research has suggested that using an apple cider vinegar rinse after bathing can help to sooth irritated skin, add ½ cup of ACV to 1 cup of water to rinse your dog’s body, and leave to air dry for best results. Alternatively, you can use an ACV-water solution in a spray bottle and use it on your dog’s coat every so often. Remember to always do a 24-hour skin test of the solution first and if your dog displays any reactive symptoms such as red, sore skin then refrain from further use. Never spray directly into your dog’s face.

Diet choice plays an important part...

Believe it or not, ensuring that your dog has a correct and high-quality diet is usually the only thing needed to maintain good skin and coat quality. It is important to choose a diet that contains ingredients that promote skin and coat care, and these will be listed on the back of the manufacturers packaging.

At Vale Pet Foods, we have made sure to include high-quality ingredients that contain great skin and coat care, such as coconut oil and sweet potato which both contain essential omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, and vitamins that all contribute to good skin and fur maintenance. In addition, choosing a grain-free diet for your dog is a great way of curbing skin issues and hypersensitivity, which makes our food a fantastic choice due to being hypoallergenic.

Most importantly, if you have any questions or queries regarding our products and skin care, or would like to know more, please do not hesitate to get in touch and we will be more than happy to help.
