Dry Food vs Raw Food

Dry Food vs Raw Food

Dry vs Raw Feeding

Every dog (and owner) is different

When it comes to feeding dogs, few topics create as much discussion as raw vs dry feeding. At Vale, we believe in being honest and balanced.

Raw feeding can be the most biologically optimal way to feed a dog when it is done correctly and fully balanced. However, we also recognise that raw feeding isn’t suitable for every dog, every household, or every lifestyle.

The best diet is the one that supports your dog’s health and works consistently for you.

Raw Feeding: The Biological Gold Standard (When Done Properly)

Raw diets are built around fresh, minimally processed ingredients with meats, bones, and organs that is designed to mirror what dogs evolved to eat.

Potential benefits of raw feeding:

  • Excellent digestibility
  • Naturally high-quality protein and fats
  • Supports dental health through chewing
  • Improves coat, skin, and stool quality
  • Minimal processing preserves nutrients

⚠️ Important considerations:

  • Balance is essential, meat alone is not a complete diet
  • Requires careful handling and storage
  • Not suitable for all dogs (e.g. intolerances)
  • Time, freezer space, and confidence matter

Raw feeding works best when meals are:
Properly formulated
Nutritionally complete
Prepared and handled responsibly

Dry Feeding: Practical, Consistent & Accessible

Dry dog food remains one of the most widely used feeding methods and for good reason. When made well, it offers reliability, convenience, and consistency.

Potential benefits of dry feeding:

  • Easy storage and feeding
  • Consistent nutrient delivery
  • Suitable for busy households
  • Longer shelf life
  • Simple portion control

⚠️ Important considerations:

  • Processing methods matter greatly
  • Ingredient quality varies widely
  • Some dogs are sensitive to certain formulations

Modern dry foods, especially gently cooked recipes with high fresh-meat inclusion are far removed from the ultra-processed kibble of the past, and present in some food!

It’s Not Raw or Dry. It’s About Quality

The real question isn’t raw vs dry it’s quality vs compromise.

A well-balanced raw diet will generally outperform a poor-quality dry food.
A high-quality dry food will often outperform an unbalanced or poorly managed raw diet.

Quality matters more than format.

Mixed & Flexible Feeding

Many owners successfully use:

  • Dry during the week, raw at weekends
  • Dry as a base with raw toppers
  • Dry for travel, raw at home

Feeding doesn’t have to be all-or-nothing. Flexibility can be a strength.

Balance Is the Non-Negotiable

Whether raw or dry, every dog’s diet must provide:

  • Complete nutrition
  • Essential vitamins and minerals
  • Appropriate energy levels

Balance is not optional.
How that balance is achieved can vary.

Our Philosophy

We believe:
Raw feeding can be the most optimal option when balanced and managed correctly
High-quality dry food can be an excellent everyday solution
No dog should be judged by how they’re fed
Feeding should fit your dog and your life

There is no single “right” way to feed every dog.

The right choice is the one that:

  • Supports your dog’s health
  • Is nutritionally complete
  • Is sustainable long-term
  • Works for your lifestyle

Whether you choose raw, dry, or a combination of both. Informed, balanced feeding is what truly matters.
